In a move that’s thrilling longtime fans, CBS has officially announced Boston Blue

In a move that has electrified fans of the long-running CBS police drama Blue Bloods, the network has officially announced the development of a new spinoff series titled Boston Blue. Even more thrilling? Both Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg are set to reprise their iconic roles as Frank and Danny Reagan, ensuring that the Reagan legacy lives on — with a bold new chapter set against the gritty backdrop of Boston.
A New Era Begins
CBS’s announcement came after months of speculation about the future of Blue Bloods, which recently concluded its 14th season. While fans were preparing to say goodbye, the network had other plans. Boston Blue, described as a “character-driven continuation with a fresh setting,” will follow Danny Reagan as he embarks on a new assignment in Boston — and he’s not alone. Patriarch Frank Reagan will also appear in a recurring capacity, providing wisdom and continuity that fans have come to expect from the Reagan family.
“We’re not done telling Reagan stories,” said CBS President Amy Reisenbach in a press release. “Boston Blue will honor the legacy of Blue Bloods while exploring new emotional territory, personal growth, and challenging cases in a city that’s both familiar and untamed.”
What We Know So Far
Set to premiere in early 2026, Boston Blue picks up after the events of the Blue Bloods finale, with Danny Reagan taking a temporary federal assignment that returns him to his family’s roots in Boston. As he dives into a series of complex investigations, Danny finds himself confronting personal ghosts, family history, and a new kind of justice system that doesn’t always follow the rules he’s known.
Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan will serve as a mentor figure from afar — appearing via calls, visits, and interagency collaboration. While he’s not expected to be in every episode, his presence will serve as the moral compass that keeps Danny grounded.
“Frank and Danny’s relationship has always been the heart of the show,” said executive producer Kevin Wade. “Now we get to explore how that bond holds up when they’re not in the same city, but still facing the same moral dilemmas.”
Casting & Production
Donnie Wahlberg returns in a starring role, and production sources confirm that Vanessa Ray (Eddie Janko), Will Hochman (Joe Hill), and possibly even Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan) are in talks to make appearances. The show will be filmed on location in Boston, offering a more raw, urban aesthetic than the New York City backdrop of its predecessor.
“Boston has a pulse,” Wahlberg said in a behind-the-scenes teaser. “It’s where I grew up. It’s where Danny was born. And now, it’s where justice is going to get a little more personal.”
Wahlberg is also expected to serve as a co-producer on the series, contributing creatively to story arcs and character development.
Fan Reaction: A Mix of Nostalgia and Anticipation
Fans of Blue Bloods have reacted with joy and nostalgia, with many taking to social media to express their excitement. Hashtags like #BostonBlue, #ReaganReturns, and #BlueBloodsForever quickly began trending after the announcement.
“I’m not ready to let go of the Reagans,” one fan tweeted. “Thank you, CBS, for knowing we still need them.”
“Boston Blue is the best news I’ve heard all year. Danny and Frank together again? Yes please,” another wrote on Facebook.
For many, Boston Blue feels like the natural evolution of the franchise — an opportunity to dig deeper into individual character arcs while retaining the themes of justice, loyalty, and family that made Blue Bloods such a beloved series for over a decade.
